Dr. Joanne Van Nest is a New Jersey licensed psychologist who has been in private practice for 20 years. Her areas of clinical expertise include the treatment of Depression, Anxiety, Adjustment Disorders, Stress Management, Assertiveness Training, Binge Eating Disorder, and Couples Therapy. Dr. Van Nest is certified in EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing) for the treatment of Post-traumatic Stress Disorder, and healing relational traumas and attachment wounds. She also has advanced training in Internal Family Systems Therapy.
Dr. Van Nest received her doctorate in Psychology from the University of Houston in 1990. Her internship training at the Veteran’s Administration Medical Center in East Orange, New Jersey, included rotations on the Inpatient Alcohol Rehabilitation Unit, the Adult Outpatient Unit, the Pain Clinic, the Family Therapy Clinic, and the Ambulatory Care Clinic. Dr. Van Nest obtained additional training and expertise as a staff psychologist at Elizabeth General Medical Center (now Trinitas Hospital), where she was instrumental in developing and coordinating a treatment program for compulsive overeaters. She has conducted seminars for hospitals and corporations on Weight Management, Change Management and Team Building. Dr. Van Nest has also provided consultation and psychotherapeutic services for the Craniofacial Center at St. Barnabas Medical Center, nursing homes, and employee assistance programs.
Dr. Van Nest was appointed to the New Jersey State Board of Psychological Examiners in 2012. She has been on the Affiliate Medical Staff at St. Barnabas Medical Center since 1996. Dr. Van Nest is a member of the New Jersey Psychological Association (NJPA), and served on NJPA’s Conference Committee from 1998 to 2012. She is also a member of the New Jersey Association of Cognitive-Behavioral Therapists, and the EMDR International Association.
