Dr. Steven Rego, PhD, LCSW, CST

Dr. Steven Rego is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker, Certified Sex Therapist, and Clinical Sexologist who provides specialized psychotherapy for individuals and couples navigating complex emotional, relational, and sexual health challenges. He completed his PhD in Clinical Sexology through the Modern Sex Therapy Institutes, where he also earned his Certified Sex Therapist (CST) designation.

Dr. Rego’s clinical practice is grounded in psychodynamic principles, emphasizing insight, relational understanding, and the integration of past experiences to promote growth and healthy intimacy. He combines this foundation with evidence-based modalities such as EMDR, cognitive-behavioral therapy, and somatic interventions to address trauma, compulsive sexual behaviors, and intimacy concerns.

With advanced training in clinical sex therapy and forensic mental health, Dr. Rego works extensively with clients facing sexual difficulties, erotic shame, performance issues, and recovery from sexual trauma. His forensic practice includes psychosexual and risk assessments, treatment for individuals involved with the legal system (including those under supervision or court mandate), and clinical services for individuals with problematic or offending sexual behaviors. He also assists couples in rebuilding trust and intimacy following infidelity and other relational ruptures.

Dr. Rego’s background includes extensive clinical work within the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, where he served as both a Suicide Prevention Case Manager and Director of a Vet Center. In these roles, he provided trauma-informed psychotherapy to combat veterans and survivors of military sexual trauma, and supervised multidisciplinary clinical teams. In the forensic domain, he has served at New Jersey’s Special Treatment Unit (working with sexually violent predators) and the Adult Diagnostic and Treatment Center in Avenel, NJ, a treatment facility for individuals with compulsive sexual offending behaviors.

In addition to his sex therapy and forensic work, Dr. Rego provides treatment for trauma, PTSD, anxiety disorders, depression, and OCD. He is experienced in helping couples manage high-conflict dynamics, desire discrepancies, and barriers to intimacy.

Dr. Rego is an active member of the Society for Sex Therapy and Research (SSTAR), the American Association of Sexuality Educators, Counselors and Therapists (AASECT), the Sexual Medicine Society of North America, the American Board of Sexology, and the Association for the Treatment and Prevention of Sexual Abuse (ATSA). He has presented professionally on trauma treatment, sexual health in forensic populations, and suicide prevention.
